I Can Make This Promise by Christine Day (Upper Skagit)
This middle grade reader was a shot through the heart. An excellent read for any age, but specifically written for a younger audience to get an understanding of a problem faced by many Natives. 12 year old Edith sets out on a path to learn about her history. She knows her mom was adopted into a white family, but she does not know the circumstances that led to that adoption. Education on Native struggles past and present is severely lacking. Works of fiction, like I Can Make This Promise, help to fill that gap. They weave stories often heard in Native communities, but not discussed outside. Day expertly creates moments of suspense, heartbreak and familial love. I highly recommend this book.
