Review of "Tantalize" and "In Real Life"

Tantalize
by Cynthia Leitich Smith (Muscogee Nation)

Tantalize is the first in a series of supernatural YA novels. More suspense than mystery, this book takes the reader through the twists and turns of Quincie’s life. Quincie lost her parents two years prior and is trying to get through high school, and making her family’s restaurant a success with its new vampire theme. I enjoyed this book and I am eager to read more in the series. Not particularly deep, this book is a fun divergence from the typical vampire novel, best suited to high school readers.

In Real Life by Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang

In Real Life successfully shows how integral gaming can be to some people’s lives and livelihoods. Focusing on one girl’s introduction to online gaming, this YA graphic novel shows the reader what gaming can mean to a person. From the exclusionary practices common in male dominated gaming (tabletop and online) circles, to the warmth and welcoming feelings that can come from a supportive community. It even shows the distrust and misunderstanding that parents can have about playing games online, as well as the ways in which online games can be manipulated for the highest bidder. I highly recommend this book for young adults and older, especially parents who would like to build a better understanding of what gaming can mean to their children.
