8/24 Book Reflection
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
This is my least favorite book in the series. You get some good information to move things along, and it is exciting, but wow does Rowling use “savage” a lot. That’s not why it’s my least favorite book though, no. It’s my least favorite book because one of my favorite characters dies. Maybe I’m growing disenchanted by the books that I loved so much as a kid. Maybe that’s a good thing.
I only have 2 books left in the series and I think I’ll be happy to not read it again. My list has been growing with a bunch of YA lit by Indigenous authors and I really want to get to that part of my reading list. After reading “A Wrinkle in Time” I thought I was, or would be, excited to read the rest of it’s series, but I’m just not into it. I checked out the second book and returned it (early) without having read a page. I’ll get to it or I won’t eventually. I’m going to take a little break from HP to read Armada by Ernest Cline, only because there is a great podcast called “372 Pages I’ll Never Get Back” that is basically a rifftrax for the book. They also did Ready Player One and that whole podcast was BEAUTIFUL. So, I’m excited for the light-hearted funny break.
I beat Kirby Star Allies! It’s wonderful and lovely and the soundtrack is GREAT. It was though, a little easy as far as Kirby games go. Even the final boss left me feeling like I got off way too easily. Even with that, I still feel as if Kirby is and always will be worth the $60. I’m sure I’ll feel differently about bosses (or just enemies in general) when I (re)start my next game, Bayonetta. ALSO! I got all the hearts with everyone in Stardew Valley. Well, I do have one heart left with my husband, Harvey and then I’ll kind of feel as if I’ve beaten that as well. I could try to get all the stars in the game, but meh? I really liked playing it, but now it just feels finished. Totally worth the $15 considering I spent WELL over 100 hours in it.
It’s no secret that I feel lonely a bunch. I’ve done my best to be open about my feelings. I don’t want anyone to think it was or is super easy to just pick up and leave for a year. Besides Ham and Ham-cat who I miss every day, I also miss some home foods. Specifically Cholula, Sriracha and Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. Now, all three of these wonderful things are available on Japanese Amazon, but ranch is so ridiculously priced that I can not justify the purchase. It’s about $30 PLUS about $16 shipping, so no. Maybe I’ll get really lucky and some kind soul will send me some and some Cool Ranch Doritos in exchange for some Japanese snack time goodies. I just really miss ranch, y’all. It’s hard on my soul.
Summer vacation is almost here! I have 4 more school days! (And like 2 weeks of teacher work days, but those will either be spent at home or at English camp). I’m pretty dang excited for summer. I’ve got plans to hang out with friends and shoot fireworks and I’m buying a yukata this weekend to wear to festivals and stuff. I picked one out in my towns mall, but I’m going to a bigger town this weekend with a MUCH BETTER mall and so I’m going to look at their selection before I make my choice.
I’m finishing up my first term in Japan really happy and really sad. I’m so happy and I feel so lucky that I got placed in such awesome schools. I love the teachers I work with. I really feel like I’m part of a team at both of my schools and if I were planning on staying longer than a year, I can’t imagine a better place to teach.
